There's a reason producers of consumer products have goofy, over the top, memorable commercials instead of just listing the factual virtues of their products. How many people know that exercise, even a little, will decrease their risk? How many people have heard ideologically-motivated misinformation about the cervical cancer vaccine? How many people have heard ideologically-motivated misinformation about breast cancer risks-for example, that abortion causes breast cancer-but haven't heard that obesity and imbalances in cholesterol are risk factors?Īwareness and outreach are actually kind of complicated, because people will often ignore new factual information, especially if it conflicts with comfortable beliefs or the status quo. But how many people know about the free or low-cost screening clinic near them? Lots of people know that quitting smoking will decrease their risk of cancer. For example, lots of people know that you should go get a colonoscopy. Second, we're not just talking about "Cancer is bad so get a prostate exam, mm'kay" awareness. For a fairly well-known example, men shouldn't have to spend the last years of their lives suffering from the side effects of unnecessary chemotherapy for a prostate tumor they'll die with, not of. Research on detecting those cases and making good decisions regarding whether to treat them is important. More research surrounding early detection is also important because there are some cancers for which tumors are unlikely to cause harm during the patient's lifetime. Often this leads to cheaper, more portable techniques that can be implemented in the developing world. It also means developing new screening techniques that are faster, cheaper, less invasive, and more sensitive. (Also, they apparently do fund some treatment research, though it's not their primary aim.) Detection doesn't just mean getting more people to the doctor's office. First of all, it's prevention, awareness, and detection. ![]() But this statement really depends on what you mean.
